The Suffering Servant
Isaiah 52:13-53
Of the song, the first and last verse – exhortation of
Christ
v. 4-6 The valley, the explanation of why He suffered. It’s
not just what is said, it is how He says it.
- v. 13 My servant shall deal prudently
- exalted for his work
- His worship – so people will be astonished
II. v. 1-3 The
examination of His suffering
- Christ was found in appearance like a man, He would appear to be a normal man.
- We wouldn’t know Him by appearance alone because He humbled Himself.
III. v. 4-6 The valley –
the explanation of His suffering
- It is necessary that His suffering be explained, so we don’t take it for granted
- He didn’t deserve the suffering it is our suffering that He took for us
- Our is used indicating it was our sin that He suffered for, not His
- II Corinthians 4:8 “not crushed”
- Isaiah 53:6 Good translation would be “crushed”
- Persecuted but not forsaken
- v. 10 the life of Jesus may also be manifested…
- By His stripes we were healed
- We owed a doubt we could not pay, Jesus paid a debt He didn’t owe
- v. 10-12 it pleased the Lord to bruise Him
- The pleasure of our Lord
- We benefit from Christ’s death, but the death, work of Christ on the cross goes way further than us, and is done to please His father.
- He is exalted for His grace and love
- Make the valley into a mountain for Isaiah 6-53
- His best is His, love, grace, mercy,…..

VI. Like Jesus my
suffering ends in glory
- God and ours suffering is working for God but not just for my good but all that are called to Christ
- God has one Son without sin but all His children have suffered
- It is written as a call to all people

It is a comfort to only God’s
people
